The responsibilities of room parents vary from grade to grade. Typically, the lower the grade the greater the responsibility (i.e. more planning). Listed below is an example of the types of events for which room parents organize. Room parents DO NOT DO EVERYTHING, but must be comfortable in calling/contacting others to help. Classroom parties There are usually three parties per year (Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day). You are responsible to contact the parents planning each party about 3 to 4 weeks in advance to remind them of the party date and time. You will receive the activity fee from the teacher and give it to the parents planning the party. (OCTOBER, DECEMBER AND FEBRUARY) Publicity Work with the teacher to determine times when something "special" is happening in the classroom. Notify the Warrenville Digest and Warrenville Press a week prior to the event and request that a photographer attend to take pictures for the newspaper. Yearbook Photographs PACE will provide film for you to provide to the party planners for each of the classroom parties. Collect the film and return them to the Yearbook coordinator. Phone Tree List Room parents are responsible for calling the "oldest and only" children in their grade when we have school or parent meeting cancellations, typically due to inclement weather or emergency school repairs. School Open House The Open House is held in September and each grade is responsible for providing 2 dozen cookies. Contact your bakers to provide the cookies. (SEPTEMBER) Catholic Schools Week Open House The open house is held the last Sunday of January after all Masses. Each grade is responsible for providing a representative after each Mass to answer questions and give school tours. (JANUARY) Field Trips Teachers may request your assistance in helping with their field trip(s). School Picnic Held at the end of the school year, room mothers may have various responsibilities for this event, including requesting supplies from parents and helping coordinate and run the event. (JUNE) Faculty Birthday Treats Each grade is asked to bring in a treat for their teacher or aide. The treat is sent with the student for the class to celebrate their teacher’s big day. Teacher Appreciation Luncheon Each grade is asked to provide food, supplies or volunteers to plan, setup and cleanup for the luncheon, usually held during Catholic Schools Week. (JANUARY) Grandparents/Special Persons Day Be available to assist the teacher, if needed. Grade Specific Events These specific room parents are responsible to coordinate the following events with the teacher and parents in their class. The Hospitality Committee may be contacted for assistance. (ALL EVENTS IN MAY)
As stated previously, this is only an example of room parent responsibilities. You will have an opportunity to meet with the room parent coordinator to discuss specifics for each grade and address questions at the Volunteer Breakfast. However, if you have questions that need to be answered before you decide to volunteer, please feel free to contact me at the number listed below. If you are interested in serving as a room parent, please indicate on your volunteer signup sheet. Lois Hitchcock, Volunteer Coordinator 630.393.2409 |
